Some useful tips if you are new to playing in public

Needless to say - practice - you owe it to your audience.. Learn at least three songs or tunes by heart. If you do this you will feel confident and are more likely to enjoy yourself and less likely to feel nervous. If you need a music stand you can use one but try not to.

Make sure your guitar, banjo, bagpipes or whatever is in tune before you go on, any audience will become restless while you tune, making it harder for you to regain their attention when you do eventually start playing.

If you can, vary the pace of each song and also the key. 3 slow songs in C will interest your audience less than a say a song in 3/4 time in C followed by a song in 4/4 time in G, etc.,

Try to think of what you will say about each song before you start. Make contact with your audience with some well chosen words, remember what you say is nearly as important as what you play.

Don't worry too much if a song goes wrong, re-start it or abandon it - it won't be the end of the world. You might be kicking yourself but come along again next time and that time get it right.

Never touch/play another musicians instrument without permission.

The time has come to leave your bedroom - the world awaits you!
